Residents of Bugesera Celebrate Progress on Access to Clean Water

Residents of Bugesera District are expressing their satisfaction with the resolution of the clean water issue, which has significantly improved their living conditions. Access to clean water has also boosted local businesses, with many people seeing positive economic returns. The residents of Mayange, Cyohoha, Ntarama, and Ruhuha are particularly grateful for the improvements they’ve experienced since the establishment of reliable water supply systems.

Jean Pierre Sibomana, a resident of Ntarama sector, recalls the difficulties they faced before consistent water supply became available. “Previously, we used to buy water at over 200 Frw per jerrycan, and sometimes it would be unavailable for extended periods. But now, water is easily accessible, and it no longer costs us as much. I have water in my home, and it is much more affordable than before.”

Annonciata Mukandayisenga, a resident of Kibenga Cell in Mayange sector, shares similar sentiments, recalling how, in the past, they had to fetch water from distant locations like Nyamata, where water would often run out. “Now, we get water in a short time, which has made a huge difference. We are able to maintain good hygiene and see the benefits in our daily lives.”

Thanks to initiatives aimed at improving water infrastructure, residents of Bugesera now have access to water on a regular basis. This has led to significant improvements, as many people no longer worry about water scarcity. Several sectors of Bugesera are being effectively managed to ensure the steady supply of clean water, particularly after the establishment of two additional water plants.

Jean Damascene Kananga, the water and sanitation officer for Bugesera District, explains that after the construction of new water plants since 2019, clean water has reached residents of 15 sectors. “Currently, water is available at a consistent rate of 75.1%, and we aim to reach 81.6% by May 2024,” he said.

Kananga further emphasized that the consistent access to clean water has positively impacted local businesses. Samuel Ndagijimana, a resident of Ruhuha sector, shared how reliable water supply has improved his food business. “Before, it was difficult, but now water is readily available, which has helped my business run smoothly.”

The residents are not only celebrating improved access to clean water but also the reduction in malnutrition and waterborne diseases. The district leadership has committed to continuing efforts to enhance water accessibility and further improve residents’ livelihoods.

Bugesera, like other regions of the country, continues to work hard to ensure clean water is available to all. With the recent completion of two additional water plants, local leaders are confident that the district will achieve full water coverage soon.
