Mali’s Minister of Defense, Gen. Sadio Camara, has been killed in attacks by armed groups carried out in the city where he lived, specifically at his residence.
Al Jazeera reported this on April 26, 2026. Since Saturday, it was reported that his home in the city of Kati was attacked multiple times by al-Qaeda and Tuareg fighters.
Camara was one of the high-ranking military officers who participated in the coups d’état that took place in Mali in 2020 and 2021.
On Sunday, the sound of gunfire was also heard in the city of Kidal and other parts of the country.
Fighters from the Azawad Liberation Front, who seek independence for the Tuareg people, focused on northern cities, while the Islamic group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) launched attacks elsewhere across the country.
The Malian Armed Forces announced that they are fighting against these armed groups.
Attacks were also carried out in the area where President Assimi Goita resides, but he was immediately evacuated to a secure location, where he continues to lead the operations.
