Fish Farming Brings Development Opportunities to Nyagatare Residents

In Nyagatare District, the growing preference for fish among residents reflects a shift in mindset and dietary habits. Many people report choosing fish over other types of meat, such as beef, due to lower prices, easier accessibility, and various health benefits.

This shift is largely driven by the availability of fish from man-made lakes in the area, where fishing days attract buyers who quickly purchase the fresh catch. Consumers say they have started noticing positive changes in their health, with some claiming that fish consumption has helped them combat malnutrition.

Residents see great potential in benefiting from fish production and wish to see other underutilized lakes given to cooperatives for development. They believe this would increase fish production and make it more accessible to a wider population.

Matsiko Gonzague, the Nyagatare District Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development

Matsiko Gonzague, the Nyagatare District Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, stated that the district’s goal is to move beyond viewing fish farming solely as a solution to nutrition challenges and instead develop it into a profitable investment sector that benefits both individuals and the district at large. He emphasized the importance of building the capacity of those involved as more people recognize the opportunities in fish farming.

At the national level, Rwanda aims to increase meat production including fish by 20% over the next four years. Fish production is expected to rise from 59,000 to 77,000 tonnes through continued promotion of professional fish farming and aquaculture.
