THE family of Zambia’s sixth Republican President Edgar Lungu have finally agreed to have his remains repatriated to Zambia from South Africa on Wednesday 18 the June after which he will be buried next Monday on
, June 23.
His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema will officially lead the burial procession.
The Government has since extended the official mourning period for another one week.
This follows the negotiations between the Lungu family, Government and other stakeholders.
Initially, the family of the deceased President claimed that Mr Lungu had left instructions with them that the Government should not have a hand in his funeral and burial.
After negotiations with the family, Government and other stakeholders, the agreement has been reached to have the deceased buried next Monday.
Before the agreement was reached, the Lungu family said they wanted to have a private funeral and insisted that they wanted to abide by the alleged instructions that the deceased left with them.
The development to have Mr Lungu buried on Monday was confirmed by Secretary to Cabinet Patrick Kangwa and family spokesperson Makebi Zulu. Patriotic Front ( PF) acting President Given Lubinda will speak during the funeral on behalf of the party
