Senator Donatille Mukabalisa, who previously served as the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, has passed away due to an illness she had been battling for some time. She died at King Faisal Hospital where she was undergoing treatment.
According to information from Igihe, news of her death became known on the morning of this Thursday, July 30, 2026. A fellow Senator who worked with her informed Igihe that they had recently visited her at the hospital where she was admitted.
Donatille Mukabalisa was born in Nyamata, Bugesera District, in July 1960. She worked as a law lecturer at the Kigali Independent University (ULK) and served in United Nations agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), for a period of 16 years.
In October 2003, Mukabalisa was elected as a Member of Parliament, a position she held until 2008. She then served as a Senator from 2011 to 2013, before returning to the Chamber of Deputies in 2013, where she served as Speaker until 2024.
She did not seek re-election in the 2024 elections after completing two terms in the Chamber of Deputies.
Donatille Mukabalisa was also the President of the Liberal Party (PL), which was founded on July 14, 1991.
