Antoine Semenyo, the Ghanaian striker playing for AFC Bournemouth, had a strong start to the English Premier League season, scoring two goals that gave his team hope against Liverpool. However, despite his individual brilliance, the match exposed the persistent issue of racism in football.
The game, played on Friday, August 15, 2025, ended with Liverpool defeating Bournemouth 4-2. Semenyo stood out by scoring in the 64th and 76th minutes, but was subjected to racist abuse from some Liverpool fans at Anfield.
The incident occurred as Semenyo was preparing to take a set piece, when some fans hurled racist remarks at him. One 47-year-old supporter was arrested on the spot by UK police, with others later taken into custody.
The abuse sparked widespread condemnation across the football world, prompting FIFA President Gianni Infantino to respond. Posting on his Instagram, Infantino made it clear that football has no place for racism or any form of discrimination.
Semenyo, who remained composed despite the abuse, later took to his social media to thank fans around the world for their support, affirming his commitment to dignity and the spirit of the game.
The Ghana Football Association also released a statement condemning the incident and calling on relevant authorities to take stronger action against racism targeting African players.
