RIB arrests Sheikh Bahame Hassan, former Mayor of Rubavu District

Sheikh Bahame Hassan, who previously served as the Mayor of Rubavu District and was recently the Coordinator of the Gitagata Rehabilitation Center, has been arrested by the National Investigation Bureau (RIB) on suspicion of committing the offense of soliciting or engaging in sexual favors from some of the individuals undergoing rehabilitation at the center, as well as abusing the authority granted to him by law for personal gain. Investigations into these offenses are ongoing, while the suspect is being held at the RIB Remera Station as the case file is being prepared for submission to the Prosecution.

RIB reminds all individuals involved in crimes related to sexual corruption to desist from such acts, as they are punishable by law. It also continues to commend people who refuse to conceal such acts of cruelty and encourages them to continue providing information in a timely manner.

RIB stated, “Investigations into these offenses are ongoing, while the suspect is being held at the RIB Remera Station as the case file is being prepared for submission to the Prosecution.”

The law on combating corruption provides that anyone convicted of the offense of abusing authority granted by law for personal gain is liable to imprisonment ranging from seven to ten years and a fine of Rwandan francs ranging from 5 million to 10 million.

The offense of committing sexual favors is punishable by imprisonment ranging from five to seven years and a fine of Rwandan francs ranging from 1 million to 2 million.
