As Rwanda prepares to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on 3 December 2025, the Rwanda Amputee Football Federation (RAFA) is using sport to highlight the abilities of persons with disabilities and promote inclusive communities.RAFA has announced a nationwide campaign of amputee football matches, set to take place in districts including Nyabihu in the Western Province. The initiative aims to raise awareness on disability rights, challenge stigma, and encourage participation in sports by persons with disabilities.According to the 2022 National Census, 391,775 Rwandans aged five and above live with disabilities, accounting for 3.4% of the population. Rural areas record a slightly higher prevalence (3.7%) compared to urban areas (2.8%). Visual impairments and mobility challenges are among the most common disabilities. Despite progress, many individuals remain unregistered or lack access to essential services, including education, health care, assistive devices, and social protection.RAFA President Audace Rugwiro emphasized the role of football in driving social inclusion. “Through these matches, we are showing that inclusion is not just a policy—it must be practiced in communities. We encourage partners and stakeholders to join efforts so that no person with a disability is left behind.”The campaign will also support government initiatives, including the distribution of 372 wheelchairs and assistive devices for 272 learners. Louis Kwizera, RAFA Vice President for Administration & Awareness, noted that promoting awareness is an ongoing effort. “Our matches bring disability issues to the forefront and encourage communities to confront stigma. True inclusion requires accessibility, participation, and continuous advocacy,” he said. The events will showcase the talent and resilience of amputee footballers while encouraging families, institutions, and local authorities to support inclusive sports and accessibility initiatives. RAFA’s campaign is aligned with national priorities to strengthen inclusive development, emphasizing identification of persons with disabilities, equitable distribution of assistive devices, accessible schools and facilities, and meaningful participation in decision-making.
Through these initiatives, RAFA highlights the power of sports to not only rehabilitate and empower persons with disabilities but also to foster community engagement, promote awareness, and advance social inclusion across Rwanda.
