Rwanda Commits to Solving the Problem of Long Queues at Health Facilities Through Technology

The Government of Rwanda has introduced a new technology-based system aimed at reducing the time patients spend waiting for services at health facilities. This system includes two new programs, “e-Buzima” and “e-Banguka”, which are expected to deliver healthcare services more efficiently and conveniently.

“e-Buzima” will allow individuals to self-diagnose minor illnesses using their phones and request appointments with doctors without having to physically go to a health facility. Patients will be able to choose the doctor they want to consult and the time that suits them, minimizing long waiting periods. This is expected to reduce congestion at health centers and improve the quality of services delivered.

On the other hand, “e-Banguka” will be used by those in need of ambulance services or referrals to other hospitals. Hospital management will be able to monitor the status of these services, including the locations and destinations of ambulances, which will enhance planning and emergency response.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, stated that these reforms are part of a broader strategy to bring healthcare services closer to the people through technology, eliminating the need for long waits. He explained that the idea came from an analysis of how other sectors like banking resolved similar challenges by introducing phone-based services.

The initiative was officially announced at the Africa HealthTech Summit held in Kigali, where Rwanda expressed its commitment to advancing digital solutions in healthcare.

The Ministry of Health indicated that this system will be operational in the coming months and accessible to users of both smartphones and basic phones, ensuring that no Rwandan is left behind in accessing these services.
