Rwanda National Police Relaunches “Gerayo Amahoro” Campaign Urging Everyone to Take Part in Road Safety

On Tuesday, October 15, 2025, the Rwanda National Police launched a new phase of the “Gerayo Amahoro” campaign focusing on shared responsibility among road users, under the initiative called “Turindane Tugereyo Amahoro.”

This campaign calls on every individual to play a role in preventing road accidents and to work together to protect the lives of all passengers and road users. The Rwanda National Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Boniface Rutikanga, said that this new approach aims to change people’s mindset regarding road safety, urging everyone to be vigilant and cautious while on the road.

He added that the campaign seeks to raise awareness that road safety is not the responsibility of one person alone, but requires cooperation and commitment to prevent accidents early.

Although the campaign’s name has changed, its goal to promote road safety and increase knowledge of traffic laws, as well as strengthen collaboration between the police and road users, remains the main focus.

In Rwanda, despite a decrease in deaths from road accidents, accidents still affect road users, with pedestrians accounting for 34% of all accidents, motorcyclists 27%, cyclists 23%, and others 16%.

These accidents are mainly caused by neglecting traffic laws, disregarding others’ safety, and lack of attentiveness among road users.

Globally, this issue remains alarming, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that over one million people die each year from road traffic accidents.

The Rwanda National Police hopes that the new “Turindane Tugereyo Amahoro” campaign will continue to reduce accidents and fatalities by encouraging all road users to understand their responsibilities and work together to protect their own and others’ lives
