Rwanda to Broaden Environmental Restoration with $18 Million GEF Grant for Southern Province

The Government of Rwanda has secured $18 million in additional support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to extend the Green Amayaga Initiative throughout the Southern Province. The new phase will now cover all six districts—Kamonyi, Muhanga, Nyanza, Ruhango, Huye, and Gisagara—boosting regional efforts in ecosystem restoration and climate adaptation.

Building on progress made in four districts under the current phase, the expanded program will implement nature-based solutions, promote integrated land and water resource management, and improve livelihoods through sustainable land use practices.

Over recent years, the Green Amayaga Initiative has made measurable impacts. It has restored nearly 930 hectares of degraded landscapes, planted over 243,000 fruit trees, and implemented erosion control on more than 13,800 hectares. The program has also protected 93 kilometers of riverbanks, introduced improved cookstoves to over 21,000 households, and provided livestock to more than 2,500 vulnerable families.

This new funding complements a separate $9 million GEF investment in the Nyungwe–Ruhango Corridor, raising total recent climate finance commitments to Rwanda to $27 million. The expansion aligns with Rwanda’s long-term development vision, national climate targets, and international commitments.
