A special football tournament held in Kigali served as a platform to reconnect former footballers and national leaders who once played a pivotal role in shaping the sport in Rwanda. The event, initiated by Karibu FC an amateur team that includes senior government officials highlighted the importance of preserving the legacy of those who once stood as pillars of Rwandan football.
Four teams participated in the tournament: Ossousa FC, Karibu FC, Mulindi FC, and Intare FC. Each team had its own unique composition former national team players, military veterans, members of the diaspora, and leaders who once played football. This diversity showcased how football continues to unite people from various walks of life and remains a powerful tool for strengthening national unity and honoring Rwanda’s sporting heritage.
The final match saw Ossousa FC take on Karibu FC, with Ossousa emerging victorious after a penalty shootout. Intare FC secured third place after defeating Mulindi FC in another round of penalties. While the prizes were modest footballs and a trophy they held symbolic value in celebrating and appreciating the contributions of those who have left a mark on the sport.
Beyond the competition, the tournament reaffirmed the commitment to bringing together those who contributed to the growth of sports in Rwanda, promoting community building, and restoring the pride associated with the nation’s football history.
