On the night of Wednesday, May 7, 2025, a man named Gatera Omar, a resident of Umucyo Village in Rwezamenyo Sector, Nyarugenge District, was killed by unknown assailants who ambushed him on his way home after watching a football match. Following this tragic incident, the Rwanda National Police announced that investigations have begun to identify and apprehend those responsible for the murder.

According to CIP Willars Gahonzire, the spokesperson of the Rwanda National Police in Kigali City, Gatera Omar was stabbed in the chest and died on the spot. He said: “The Rwanda National Police is deeply saddened by the death of Gatera Omar, and we extend our condolences to his family and friends. We are currently working with other security organs in an investigation aimed at apprehending the perpetrators.”
The body of the deceased was immediately taken to the Rwanda National Police Hospital in Kacyiru for a legal autopsy. Preliminary information provided by residents and local night patrol guards indicates that Gatera was ambushed around midnight near a patrol post known locally as “Kwa Filipo.”
The Executive Secretary of Rwezamenyo Sector told HANGA News, the source of this report, that security measures are being strengthened in response. She said: “We are intensifying efforts to combat crime and robbery in this sector. We have urged residents to continue reporting any suspicious activity in a timely manner.”
This is not the first time criminal activity linked to robbery has occurred in Rwezamenyo. On April 17, 2025, a woman returning from work was attacked by robbers who took all her belongings and left her injured. Such incidents have raised concerns among residents, who are calling for increased security interventions.
The police have appealed to the public to provide any information that could help identify those responsible for the murder of Gatera Omar so that justice can be served.
