While the Rayon Sports WFC women’s football team recently won the 2024/2025 Rwanda Women’s Football League championship, its players are currently facing serious livelihood challenges after going three months without receiving their salaries.
On Thursday, May 15, 2025, the players wrote a letter to the club management pleading to be paid, as their living conditions continue to worsen. In the letter, the players stated they have not received their salaries for three months — February, March, and April — and are also owed match bonuses. They were promised eight bonuses for games they won but were only paid for two.
Some players have already started being evicted from the houses they were renting due to the long delay in payments, while others, especially foreign players, are requesting the club to cover their travel expenses back to their home countries now that the season has ended and they have no means to sustain themselves.
“We gave our all to bring pride to the club, we won games, but the management did not honor its commitments or recognize our efforts. Now we’re being evicted from our homes, and some of us are stuck with no way to survive,” reads part of the letter.
Although the team won the league title and finished second in the Peace Cup — losing 4-2 to Indahangarwa WFC in the final — the victory on the field has not translated into a better livelihood for its players.
