The inaugural edition of Kigali Streetball stood out as a model for how sports and entertainment events can be organized at a high standard in Rwanda, emphasizing quality, timely prize distribution, and showcasing young talent. Held in Kigali from July 19 to 20, 2025, the tournament featured teams from various categories and was attended by the Minister of Sports, Nelly Mukazayire.
The event’s organizer, Kamatari Murenzi, stated that achieving their set goals resulted from early planning, financial investment, and close
supervision of every detail. Despite having a team in place, he explained that he personally took full responsibility to ensure the event’s success.
One of the key highlights was the immediate distribution of prizes via mobile money (Momo), with winning teams receiving up to RWF 800,000 without delays or needing to report to offices. Participants noted that this was the first time in Rwanda a tournament had delivered prizes so efficiently and reliably.

The tournament also served as a platform to discover untapped talent, particularly children from Rusizi who stood out while competing against more experienced players from top leagues. The event also featured performers in dance and Hip Hop, including a dance crew from Goma in the DRC and Young Zakii, also known as Motar, who was recognized for his outstanding Hip Hop performance.
Kigali Streetball revealed a gap in public awareness about Streetball in Rwanda. However, due to the high turnout, perceptions are beginning to change. The next edition is expected to attract an even larger audience and new talent inspired by this year’s event.
Minister Nelly Mukazayire pledged continued support to help grow the event, promising that preparations for next year’s tournament would begin early to ensure even greater success.
