Lamine Yamal, one of the most talented young players at FC Barcelona and in the Spanish national team, continues to show that he wants to build his own name in his own way. In an interview with CBS News, Yamal openly stated that he does not want to live in the shadow of Lionel Messi, even though he respects him as one of the greatest players in history.
The 17-year-old said that what matters most to him is the joy football gives him. He explained that his goal is not to chase records or score many goals, but to keep entertaining football fans and playing freely.
Yamal said: “What I prioritize is joy. I play so that people can enjoy the game. I am a player who wants to bring happiness to others, not one who plays to chase world records.” He added that he hopes children will look up to him because of the joy and passion he brings to what he does.
Regarding the type of car he hopes to own one day, he said he is not driven by flashy appearances but prefers a car that will be comfortable for him and enjoyable for his friends. He said he is not looking at a Lamborghini but would be happy with an Audi, Mercedes, or Cupra.
Yamal also said that the goals he enjoys the most are two: the one he scored against France at the Euro and the one he scored against Club Brugge.
When it comes to being compared to Messi, Yamal said he accepts it because it is normal for a Barcelona player, but he prefers to follow his own path.
He said: “Messi is the greatest player in history. But I don’t want to be Messi. I want to be myself, and Messi knows that too.”
