A Zambian Peace and Conflict Resolution Scientist has warned that a possible withdrawal of the United States of America from the United Nations (UN) would have serious consequences for global stability.
Tom Njobvu explained that the UN was established to prevent war, promote cooperation and support development across the world.
Mr. Njobvu noted that the US is both a founding member and the largest financial contributor to the UN, supporting critical programmes in peacekeeping, health, education and humanitarian assistance.
He cautioned that many developing countries, particularly in Africa, South America and Asia, rely heavily on these services.
“Without US support, poorer nations would face the greatest burden,” he cautioned.
Mr. Njobvu added that the UN provides a vital platform for diplomacy and for addressing global challenges such as climate change, pandemics and conflict.
He further warned that the United States itself would suffer from isolation and diminished global influence if it disengages from the UN.
“Such a move will create an opportunity for rival superpowers to fill the leadership gap, thereby weakening the US moral authority and reducing its diplomatic influence,” Mr. Njobvu added.
He urged other UN member states to take greater responsibility in sustaining the organization by honoring their financial obligations and strengthening multilateral cooperation.
The scientist emphasized that global challenges require unity, noting that the UN remains the best hope for world peace and cooperation.
Meanwhile, United States President Donald Trump has announced plans to withdraw the US from 66 United Nations and international organizations, including major forums for cooperation on climate change, peace and democracy.
According to international media reports, a list shared by the White House includes 35 non-UN organizations, notably the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
