ZAMBIA, DRC RENEW COMMITMENT TO JOINTLY FIGHT CROSS-BORDER CRIME

By Cecilia Chiluba/Zambia/Lusaka

The 14th Session of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)–Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security has closed in Lubumbashi with a renewed commitment to jointly combat crime along the two countries’ common border.

Minister of Defence, Ambrose Lufuma, led the Zambian delegation, which also included Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Jacob Mwiimbu.

The DRC is facing instability in the eastern part of the country and is seeking regional and international support to end the ongoing insurgency.

Speaking at the close of the three-day meeting, Mr. Lufuma emphasized the importance of regional stability in enhancing trade between Zambia and the DRC.

“Zambia has commenced exporting beef to the DRC while the actualization of the Lobito Corridor and the construction of the Kolwezi-Solwezi are progressing well,” Mr. Lufuma stated.

He added that Zambia remains committed to promoting lasting peace and security across the region to ensure the success of key economic projects.

Meanwhile, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwiimbu called for enhanced collaboration between Zambia and the DRC in curbing crime along the common border.

“Defence and security services from both countries must continue conducting joint patrols and operations,” he stressed.

In his remarks, DRC Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Security, Decentralization and Traditional Affairs, Lukoo Bihango Jacquemain Shabani, urged both countries to intensify efforts to fight banditry, terrorism and transnational organized crime.

“The Joint Permanent Commission is a good avenue for ironing out all security concerns,” Mr. Shabani said.

He thanked DRC President Felix Tshisekedi Tshilombo and Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema for their continued cooperation in strengthening bilateral relations.

Mr. Shabani further noted that Zambia and the DRC share strong historical ties that should be further enhanced.

This is contained in a statement issued by Ministry of Defence Principal Public Relations Officer, Paul Shalala.
