During the East African Youth Parliament (EAYP), in the second sitting of the 8th Assembly held in Arusha, Tanzania, youth representing member states of the East African Community (EAC) highlighted skills and peace as vital pillars for building sustainable regional development.
The meeting focused on four key thematic areas linked to the future of the region: climate change, jobs and economic opportunities, sexual and reproductive health alongside mental health promotion, and education, peace, and security.
The EAYP is a platform established to enable young people to participate in governance, advocacy, and the promotion of cooperation and capacity-building within the East African Community.
In discussions regarding climate change, climate justice, and the green economy, emphasis was placed on securing climate finance, technology, knowledge, and economic opportunities for youth in the green economy.
On jobs and economic opportunities, the youth highlighted the importance of enhancing the free movement of young workers and entrepreneurs, reducing barriers related to work and business permits, and supporting youth-led enterprises to access markets and finance.
Another topic discussed was sexual and reproductive health, preventing child marriage, and promoting mental health. This issue focused on protecting the rights of children and youth, expanding reliable and youth-friendly health services, and supporting young people facing mental health challenges.
Regarding education, peace, and security, discussions centered on promoting quality education and skills aligned with the labor market, as well as encouraging youth to participate in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and enhancing regional security.
Hon. Mugisha Rugango Jean Felix, Executive Director of the Green Rwanda Initiative, demonstrated how these topics are interconnected.
He emphasized that education, skills in the green economy (Green Skills), combating climate change, access to employment, youth health, and peace are essential pillars for building a sustainable and inclusive EAC driven by youth.
In messages delivered by leaders, it was further emphasized that young people should not merely be viewed as leaders of tomorrow, but as leaders and partners of today who should play an active role in decision-making processes.
Rt. Hon. Joseph Ntakirutimana, Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), encouraged the youth to take an active part in governance and decision-making.
He stated: “Youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow; you are the leaders and partners of today.”
He urged the youth to utilize their knowledge and capabilities, have the courage to offer ideas, and prepare to take on leadership responsibilities in building the East African Community.
The meeting highlighted the importance of providing youth with a platform to participate in the governance and development of the region. It also reinforced that the voice of the youth must transition from discussions into decisions, policies, and concrete actions so they can become true partners in accelerating the implementation of the East African Community’s goals.
