GERMANY through the Start Fund has awarded £250,000 to a consortium led by World Vision UK to deliver urgent humanitarian assistance to communities affected by severe flooding in Zambia.
And a follow-up contribution of €19.5 million has been committed for the 2026–2028 period, beginning in 2026.
The project will reach approximately 3,900 flood affected households around 20,700 people across Eastern, Southern, and Western Provinces.
The response will focus on communities Lundazi and Lumezi districts of Eastern Province, Monze in Southern Province and Shangombo in Western Province.
The funding will enable the rapid implementation of life-saving interventions in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Protection, including prevention and response to gender-based violence (GBV).
Activities are designed to address urgent public health risks, restore safe access to water and sanitation, and strengthen protection services for the most vulnerable populations affected by the floods.
Germany is a key supporter of the Start Fund and currently the second-largest donor after the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). In the 2023–2025 funding period, including top-ups, Germany contributed approximately €28 million.
Through its strong support of the Start Fund, Germany continues to reinforce rapid, locally driven humanitarian responses to emerging crises worldwide. The Zambia flood response underscores the importance of swift, coordinated action to protect lives, prevent disease outbreaks, and safeguard vulnerable communities in the aftermath of natural disasters.
This is according to the statement released on Wednesday by Lisa Stubbs who is in charge of Press and Public Relations Development Cooperation, Political & Cultural Affairs at the embassy of Germany in Zambia.
