This incident occurred in Kayonza District, where a police officer who was on duty was struck by a motorcycle and died. The deceased had only been in the police service for a short time.
The fatal accident happened on the Buhabwa dirt road, located in Murundi Sector, Kayonza District, at around 1:00 a.m. on Christmas night.
According to information from Umuseke, family members of Habugusenga John said that the deceased and his colleague were on duty providing security when a motorcyclist carrying a passenger hit him from behind, causing him to fall.
One family member said, “Those who helped him rushed him to the hospital, but it was found that he had already suffered fatal injuries because his ribs and jaw were severely damaged.”
They added that information they received indicated that both the motorcyclist and the passenger were drunk. The motorcyclist was also injured and is currently receiving medical treatment.
PC Habugusenga was taken to King Faisal Hospital while still alive but in critical condition, and he died on Friday.
The Eastern Province Police Spokesperson, SP Hamdoun Twizeyimana, said he does not yet have detailed information about the officer’s death, apart from knowing that it resulted from an accident.
PC Habugusenga John was 21 years old and was among the 1,900 youths who were recently recruited into the Rwanda National Police.
He was from Kibirizi Village, Rwotso Cell, Kibirizi Sector, Nyanza District.
His family says his body is currently at the mortuary of King Faisal Hospital.
