Rwamagana Leaders Urge Parental Vigilance Against Digital Risks and Domestic Conflict to Protect Children

The District of Rwamagana has initiated an intensive campaign to address the dual threats of unregulated social media and domestic instability. During a District Coordination Committee meeting held on March 2, 2026, at the Center for Champions TSS, local leaders and security organs gathered to tackle rising concerns over child protection, illicit substances, and the erosion of cultural values among the youth.

The conversation centered on the urgent need for parents to reclaim their role as the primary guardians of their children’s behavior, both in the physical world and online. Twagirayezu Daniel, the village chief of Kinteko in the Gahengeli sector, emphasized that the safety of a child begins with open communication at home. He challenged parents to break the silence surrounding child abuse to ensure justice and safety.

“Parents must engage in dialogue with their children and immediately report any case of violence or abuse without concealment,” Twagirayezu Daniel stated, stressing that cultural values must be the foundation for helping children distinguish right from wrong.

Building on this call for community responsibility, the Mayor of Rwamagana District, Mbonyumuvunyi Radjabu, detailed the broader administrative efforts currently underway. He noted that the “Gender Accountability Dialogue” program, which began on March 2 and will run until March 24, 2026, is specifically designed to combat gender-based violence and property disputes that often leave children vulnerable.

Mayor Mbonyumuvunyi Radjabu pointed out that family conflicts are a direct driver of social issues, including the rise of street children and the alarming rates of teenage pregnancies, particularly in sectors near urban centers. He further identified the digital landscape as a significant factor in these behavioral shifts.

“Parents are called to better control the use of mobile phones, social media, and television by their children,” the Mayor indicated, explaining that many minors are negatively impacted by content they are not yet mature enough to filter.

The meeting concluded with a unified resolution: a safe future for the youth of Rwamagana requires a multi-faceted approach. By combining strict parental supervision of digital tools with a commitment to resolving domestic conflicts, the district aims to create a stable environment where children can thrive without the interference of harmful modern influences.
