Heavy clashes continue between Congolese government forces allied with Burundian troops and the Wazalendo, and on Friday, a shell fired from Burundi hit a communications tower in Kamanyola, killing civilians.
This marks the fourth consecutive day of ongoing fighting. Radio Maendeleo reports that the Wazalendo clashed with the AFC-M23 on the outskirts of Kamanyola in the Walungu territory.
In the Tshivanga hills in Kalehe territory, gunfire was heard in the Bufulero and Kaziba hills.
Fighting is taking place in Kamanyola, near the Luvumvi River, which separates the Uvira and Walungu territories. Wazalendo fighters reportedly attacked M23 positions aiming to enter Kamanyola.
In Kamanyola, many residents are fleeing to Rwanda.
Reports indicate that in Luvungi, shells coming from areas controlled by AFC/M23 caused civilians to flee to Sange, Runingu, Ndolera, and Uvira.
AFC/M23 spokesperson Laurence Kanyuka stated that on Friday, December 5, 2025, Congolese forces, FARDC, and their allies continued attacks in populated areas of North and South Kivu, using warplanes, drones, and heavy weapons.
He said this war “involves unacceptable cruelty and continues to terrorize the population.”
Kanyuka added that the death toll from the new clashes is rising, homes are being destroyed by shells, and civilians, including women and children, are being killed.
On Thursday, December 4, 2025, shells fired from Burundi around 5:30 PM fell in the Rubumba area, targeting Kamanyola, killing four people and severely injuring two others, according to Kanyuka.
The fighting escalated after Thursday in Washington DC, where President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi and President Paul Kagame signed a peace agreement. President Donald Trump stated that he had ended a 30-year war that had killed 10 million people.
